Conversion from KML to TopoJSON
Upload your Keyhole Markup Language (KML) data files (typically used in software like Google Earth, Google Maps, Locus Map or other software for outdoor activities) and convert them online in a few clicks to TopoJSON format (most commonly used in software such as QGIS, D3.js, OpenLayers or Highcharts) or to many other formats commonly used in GIS and CAD systems.
How it works
-
Data upload
Upload one or more Keyhole Markup Language (KML) files (or a .ZIP / .7z archive).
-
Review and display
Reviewing input data parameters and displaying their extent on a map.
-
Conversion options
Settings for format options and conversion parameters.
-
Download result
Resulting TopoJSON files are packaged in ZIP format and ready for immediate download by the user.
Technical details
Input data
Format | Keyhole Markup Language |
---|---|
Description | OGC-standard XML for geographic visualization (folders, styles, overlays). <MultiGeometry> maps to GEOMETRYCOLLECTION in GDAL/OGR. |
File type | vector / single-file |
Extensions | .kml |
Note | XML text; may reference external images/models/icons. |
Supported geometries | POINT LINESTRING POLYGON GEOMETRYCOLLECTION |

Output data
Format | TopoJSON (topological GeoJSON) |
---|---|
Description | Topology-aware variant of GeoJSON that references shared arcs. Great for political/admin boundaries with common edges. |
File type | vector / single-file |
Extensions | .topojson / .json |
Note | JSON with shared arc topology; reduces duplication in boundaries. |
Supported geometries | POINT MULTIPOINT LINESTRING MULTILINESTRING POLYGON MULTIPOLYGON GEOMETRYCOLLECTION |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is KML file?
The KML (Keyhole Markup Language) format is an XML-based file format developed by Keyhole Inc. (later acquired by Google) for storing and visualizing geospatial data. It is primarily used to represent geographic features such as points, lines, polygons, images, and overlays, often together with descriptive information like names, icons, or metadata. KML files are widely used for displaying data in Google Earth, Google Maps, and other GIS (Geographic Information System) applications that support the format. Because KML is human-readable and based on standard XML, it is easy to create, edit, and share for visualization and geographic analysis.
What is the maximum allowed size of input data?
The maximum size of the uploaded file is 5 GB. If your file is larger, you can try to compress it into a ZIP file with the maximum compression level (9) or, even better, into a 7z file. The contents of the package will be automatically unpacked on the server.
How secure is my data?
All data transfers are performed using the encrypted SSL protocol, which ensures secure data transfer. Both uploaded and converted data is temporarily stored in the data center and is further processed according to the user’s request. After some time, the data is automatically deleted - there is no need to delete it manually.
